WAYBACK WEDNESDAY… SPIDEY SECRETS!

November 23, 2016

When I started drawing Spider-Man for Marvel, I wanted to bring a couple of things VISUALLY to the character. Among them, you can see below in the photos of the ORIGINAL black and white pencil/ink work.

The most IMPORTANT thing (for me at least) was having a sense that Peter Parker had spider powers…NOT that he just dressed in a costume with webs, but that he really had TAKEN OVER some of the personality of a spider. So as often as I could, I put him in positions that would be IMPOSSIBLE for ANY human.
I tried to show that by having him hang upside down like we see spiders do in real life.

Secondly, Spider-Man needed to feel like he was having FUN with his secret identity. I mean, if YOU had the powers of a spider, could make webs, crawl up buildings AND swing across the city, wouldn’t you have a BIG ASS SMILE on your face (most of the time at least)?

So with those two aspects firmly in my head, I thought having him hanging upside down from a ton of his own webbing while reading comic books would fit the bill.

That’s it for today.

Be good.
