Todd Tips Tuesday…Making Comics Three-Dimensional

February 11, 2020

One thing that is very hard is making two-dimensional comics look THREE dimensional.

I was big and CONTINUE to be big on having things break up a panel. Below is a page from Coyote issue 14, a comic I did early in my professional career. The tentacles on the page are coming from the bleed from the right side and the top of the page.

WHY???

I felt that it gave a sense of DEPTH if you LAYER the composition. It feels more like the tentacles are in the front of the scroll and pushes back to give me dimension. I now have foreground (tentacles cutting in front of his chest), middle-ground (the figure itself) and background (tentacles behind his body).

Try to create depth in your art and post it in the comments HERE.
