TODD TIPS TUESDAY

October 06, 2015

One of the things I look at is NOT how they do all the COOL action scenes (those are easy), but how they make all the OTHER stuff come alive…..

I’ve said it before… one of the HARDEST parts of drawing a comic book, is taking the pages of people standing around and doing NOTHING and making it INTERESTING so the reader isn’t rolling their eyes and GROANING as they wait for the hero to put on the costume and fight the bad guy.

Since I know some of you won’t be able to make it to New York, I wanted to give you a little advice…

Below is a page from Spider-Man (do you know what issue??). You can see the progression I made on the page-layouts. Notice on the page, I opened the BORDERS around the FIRST and SECOND panel. I added a black box behind two of them and as I overlapped the two panels, I staggered them. The LAST panel was a close-up of Eddie Brock…notice that it’s cut into THREE piece, when it could have EASILY just been made into one big square.

At times I am PROUDER of the “boring pages” (if you will)…than I am of some of my well-known action pages…. just because they’re more of a challenge.
