TODD TIPS TUESDAY!!!

TODD TIPS TUESDAY!!!

When I first saw ‘Spider-Man’ the movie, I was like WOW…they actually used some of the ideas I had put into the the character I drew back in the 90’s. It was REALLY flattering and even COOLER to see those ideas in the BIG SCREEN (just like it will be when the NEW SPAWN movie comes out)!

When I write AND specifically DRAW a comic, I ALWAYS think of each scene like a MOVIE. I think about all of the angles that a scene can be play out and HOW those angles help advance the story in an interesting way.

When I was doing issue 5 of Spider-Man, a couple of things that were going through my head. I was trying to set up the page the way the movie would play out (before they even thought about making Spider-Man as a movie).

In a movie, you have a sound score…you have MUSIC dropped behind what is going in the movie…BUT  you CAN’T add sound to comic books.

For example, when you see the word ‘DOOM’ on a page (like the page from Spider-Man #5 below), it signaled the musical build up one would hear in a tense scene of a film. And as the tension GREW, the ‘doom’ got LARGER, indicating a musical swell.

The tension rose, things happened, and then it would calm back down.

It’s MY job as the artist to create the effect of music ARTISTICALLY.

So I’d be like the ‘music conductor’ of comic books. I wonder if that will ever become a real job???

Enjoy.
