#ThrowbackThursday with Erik Larsen!!!

January 28, 2016

The year 2012 gave me TWO things to celebrate…the 20th anniversary of the inception Image Comics AND the inception of the Spawn comic.

So to help mark the historic occasion, I wanted to create some COOL covers for issue #220 while paying homage to Image.

For those of you who know your Image Comic history, Erik Larsen‘s Savage Dragon was one of the FIRST to hit shelves back in 1992 (along with Spawn, of course… And for those of you who want to WATCH the history of Image Comics, you can check out this COOL new documentary, here.)

So to CELEBRATE, I decided to do a PARODY of some of the first Image Comics to ever hit shelves in 1992…and one of them was Savage Dragon!

The reason I like this cover is because it features a SINGLE character coming DIRECTLY at you. It feels like the character is leaping off of the page (and you know how much I love DEPTH). I put Spawn in Dragon’s place and had a bit of fun with it….

In the ORIGINAL cover, Dragon has the fin on his head, but in MY take I was able to maneuver Spawn’s cowl (because that is one of the most important parts of his costume), into the shape of the fin.

I also chose to keep the garish colors from the original and wanted to mimic the old school comic book logo and lettering seen on the front of the original.

I like BIG graphic stuff, so this cover was a lot of fun for me to draw.

And now four years later….we are BACK TOGETHER collaborating on Spawn, so it’s come full circle. Dragon and Spawn (or better known as Erik and Todd) together again!
