Why is Spider-Man Upside Down??

When I started drawing Spider-Man for Marvel Comics years ago, I wanted to bring something different to the character visually.
 
The FIRST, and MOST important thing, was having a sense this character, Peter Parker, had spider powers. Not that he just dressed up in a costume, but that he REALLY had taken over some of the personality of a spider.
 
Secondly, as part of that acting, Spider-Man needed to FEEL like he was having ‘fun’ with his secret identity. I mean, if YOU had the powers of a spider and could make webs and crawl up buildings and swing across the city, wouldn’t you have a big ass smile on your face most of the time??
