SPAWN…ON IT’S WAY TO 301!

January 26, 2016

I’ve ALWAYS wanted to have the LONGEST running independent comic book. My intent when I FIRST put out Spawn back in 1992, was to have it last for well over 200 issues (I think I’ve done that).
I FINALLY hit Spawn issue 260!! I remember thinking to myself when Spawn hit issue 250, THAT was a BIG milestone! But NOW, I’m LESS than 50 issues away from 301 (because that is when I will have the longest running independent comic)!!
The current record for the longest running independent comic is held by fellow CANADIAN and just all around cool dude, Dave Sims called ‘Cerebus the Aardvark’. For those of you who know your Spawn trivia… in Spawn issue #5, I snuck in a Cerebus doll on Cyan’s crib in a panel.
A while back (ok…a LONG while back) I got him to be a guest writer on Spawn issue 10. He did this COOL one-shot story with Cerberus and Spawn. And at issue 10, I still had a LONG way to go to hit the 301!!

Anyways…I was always a fan of books that made it up over 200 or 300 issues and I ALWAYS wanted to have one of those books…not jump from one book to another. Some guys like to create a bunch of characters, which isn’t bad, but that’s not MY mindset.
I’d rather create a couple of ideas, stick with them, write them as long as I can, and THEN worry about going to the next idea.
Look it…if you can invent your Mickey Mouse, you don’t have to get GREEDY and create FIVE other characters past that. You can actually make a GOOD living from just one GOOD idea.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…ONE good idea is ALL you need!!
Be good.
