THIS IS THE BEST MONTH…. Why???? It’s Spawn month!!! Twenty-three YEARS ago this month, SPAWN made its debut. Well, that’s what the cover says anyway (it was actually a couple weeks late because I was putting the finishing touches on my FIRST original comic and didn’t hit shelves until June…. oops!!!).
I know you good people like stories, so let’s take a quick trip down memory lane to that day when Spawn came out….
The day Spawn #1 hit shelves, I was signing at a comic shop on Melrose in Los Angeles. I knew there would be a line (because of my past work atMarvel on The Amazing Spider-Man) but I didn’t know JUST HOW LONG it would be!!! It wrapped around the block and went into a neighborhood which prompted the cops to show up…
Anyway, while the shop was getting set up I went to talk to some fans to thank them for being there because I felt bad they had such a long wait! It was pretty COOL how many people wanted to support my new venture with Spawn and Image Comics and I wanted to show the fans I truly appreciate them!!!
Back in the hey day of Image Comics, all the founders would try and make each other’s signings…. so when Jim Lee and Robert Liefeld showed up, we had to take a picture!! And that baby in the other picture is my oldest daughter, Cyan (who is now 23 years old and in Medical School). I can’t remember WHY I had Cyan with me… but I did. And I held her the ENTIRE time I was signing… Cyan in one hand, a sharpie in the other…….

My next story is going to be about the Spawn ‘funny car.’
