My NEW Dragon Painting

May 21, 2015

My NEW (and FINISHED) dragon painting!! And my 30 SECOND video showing how I got there.

I’ve been working on a new digital painting of a cool dragon head for all of you Game of Thrones and DeviantArt fans. Today I’m showing the whole process of how I got to the finished product.!

Here’s a quick recap:

STEP 1: Get your idea on paper (or the computer) as FAST as you can. Don’t waste time trying to make it ‘perfect’… just get it down!

STEP 2: Lay the base color…. Quickly. Again, this isn’t the time to make things look ‘pretty.’ Just pick your base colors (either light or dark) and fill it in.

DRAGON 2 with steps

STEP 3: Blend your base colors and start to add in the shadows (so it begins to build the form).

DRAGON 3 with steps

STEP 4: Add more texture and highlights. As you can see in the picture labeled ‘Step 4’ I’ve added more details (wrinkles, wart, scales, etc.)around the eye and forehead. Then refined the mouth a little bit. I also added highlights on the neck and ‘back’ area to contrast the shadows from the last couple ‘Steps’.

STEP 5: More details, color and nuances. This is where the dragon really starts to come alive with the blue veins, red eye and skin texture. Here is where you can spend all the time you want doing silly little detail tricks.

FINAL STEP: Sometimes you need to walk away and come back to it. After I had my “finished” product, I took some time away from it and came back to make some changes as you can see below. I made the neck skinnier, because when the neck gets too thick I think it starts to look like a dinosaur… but if it’s too skinny than it looks more like a lizard. What do you think? Which version do you like better?

BELOW is a cool video of the progression. If you wait until the end…you’ll see the FINAL product!
