My Drawing Process From Start to Finish…

December 27, 2017

I get a lot of people on Facebook asking to see my drawing process from start to finish.  Here’s a video I did a few years back showing that process. So for those of you who’s New Year resolution is to improve your drawing skills, hope this helps.
Also…here’s a written step by step guide for you folks!

STEP 1: Get your idea on paper (or the computer) as FAST as you can. Don’t waste time trying to make it ‘perfect’… just get it down!

STEP 2: Lay the base color…. Quickly. Again, this isn’t the time to make things look ‘pretty.’ Just pick your base colors (either light or dark) and fill it in.

STEP 3 (shown below): Blend your base colors and start to add in the shadows (so it begins to build the form).

STEP 4 (shown below): Add more texture and highlights. As you can see in the picture labeled ‘Step 4’ I’ve added more details (wrinkles, wart, scales, etc.)around the eye and forehead. Then refined the mouth a little bit. I also added highlights on the neck and ‘back’ area to contrast the shadows from the last couple ‘Steps’.

FINAL STEP (shown below): More details, color and nuances. This is where the dragon really starts to come alive with the blue veins, red eye and skin texture. Here is where you can spend all the time you want doing silly little detail tricks.
