Toddfather Talk

Motivational Monday!!

May 24, 2016

Back in 1991, after leaving Marvel Comics, Rob Liefeld, Erik Larsen, Mark Silvestri, Jim Valentino, Whilce Portacio, and Jim Lee needed another pow-wow, so in early February 1992, the seven founding members of Image Comics, gathered at Mark’s house to talk about WHAT characters we would do and which direction we would go.

Since I KNEW I was going to do Spawn, I was trying to sort through what the FIRST issue would look like. The genesis of how black and MYSTICAL Spawn was going to be, is all conveyed in Spawn image below.

Once we each figured out our characters, it began the trek of us becoming much MORE than just ARTISTS. And even though we left FOR artistic reasons, we also knew that other things would come. We HAD to learn how to become BUSINESSMEN at the SAME time we were being artists.

Obviously doing the art part was what we knew best BUT the business side had a learning curve.

Even though we are coming up on the 25th anniversary of Image Comics (I’m showing my age here) we STILL have learning curves with the changing industry.

That’s WHY I’m ALWAYS staying on top of what is going on, because WITHOUT that, we won’t get another 25 years.

Be good.
