Mid-Week Motivation. Why I sat on Spawn for Years…

April 04, 2018

When I was working for Marvel and DC Comics, I kept Spawn close to me and NEVER pitched him to editors. I created several new characters for Marvel and DC, within the confines of their universe, but held onto Spawn because I thought SOMEDAY I might use him.

At our FIRST meeting of Image Comics, each one of the founders said out loud what we were all planning. I said I wanted to do ‘SPAWN’.
I dusted him off, changed some aspects visually (because there is ALWAYS room for improvement), and went on to put out Spawn issue one.

So why am I telling you folks this?? Because THIS IS THE TIME for INDEPENDENT CREATORS.

Put your ideas down on paper (not just locked away in your head), get FEEDBACK (yes…I know this is a hard one), and SUBMIT your concept to editors.

It only takes ONE YES to get started…just ONE.11050319_941800612530688_2490273598655284719_o

Here’s a little gem I found a while back. It’s an unpublished Spawn page from 1977 (I’m dating myself now).

Be good.
