For a lot of you, you may THINK you know the first appearance of the character I co-created…Venom. And most of you may think it was in The Amazing Spider-Man issue 300. BUT really, it was The Amazing Spider-Man issue 298!
Earlier in that issue, Venom appears, although we were trying to be secretive at that point. Eddie Brock (aka Venom) gets a full blown appearance in issue 300.
More significantly, the page below is SPIDER-MAN who’s still in the BLACK costume. It HADN’T evolved into Venom…yet.
Anyways…One of the things I said to my editor was that I would be more happy to jump onto a Spider-Man book, but the black costume didn’t mean anything to me. To me, Spider-Man was (and is) the guy in blue and red. He promised me that by issue #300, Spider-Man would come back to the TRADITIONAL costume..and that’s just what happened.
So when Spidey went back to the traditional costume, it was VENOM’S time to shine.
