Job of a LIFETIME…Inking over JACK KIRBY’S Pencils

February 04, 2016

Back when I finally had a well established career, I was able to do some projects that were TRUE highlights as a fan myself (or as you young folks call it…FANBOYING).
I am almost PROUDER of those moments than the ongoing monthly comic books I did myself. Anyways… I got call from my editor who asked me to ink a cover for a new mini-series he was starting at Topps Comics called ‘Satan Six’.  The LEGENDARY Jack Kirby was the artist on the series.

Now I started reading comics back in the 1970’s and was influenced by Byrne and Perez. But I also did my homework on those artists who were BEFORE my time like John Buscema, Gil Kane, and of course, Jack Kirby. They were MASTERS of the industry.

So when I got the call to ink over Jack Kirby, it was a chance of a lifetime!!

I received Jack’s cover and went to work inking a section of it. While in the middle of the first section, I stopped inking and ERASED a little of the pencils to make sure my ink line was showing up how I wanted.

Then I had an EPIPHANY!! I had JUST ERASED JACK KIRBY’S PENCILS!!!!! I was holding his pencils in the eraser shavings in my hand (I can only image what you good people are thinking because I was thinking the SAME THING)!

I felt TERRIBLE!! I knew I couldn’t ink the whole page and then erase Jack’s art. I ended up inking the rest of the cover on a vellum overlay and re-inking the section I had previously done.

One of the things I wanted to do was take Jack’s style and keep all his detail, but see if I could put a little bit of the 90’s noodling style that was coming in vogue. If you take a look at the hands and fingers, you’ll see there’s a lot of that style in there.  Even the wrinkles in the guy’s jacket behind the main character.

I just wanted to give it a little bit of flavor to what Jack had put down…his construction was done so well.
And that’s exactly what I did.
