Back in the 90’s there was this GREAT show called ‘The Comic Greats’ with Stan Lee. It debuted in 1991 and yours truly got to be the FIRST guest on the show! It was a pretty COOL time.
At the time of the show, Stan wasn’t yet “Stan the Man” like we know him today… BUT he was a PEOPLE PERSON back then…and he’s STILL a people person TODAY. If Stan wasn’t famous he’d STILL love hanging out and talking with people. He LOVES comics, he loves what he does but above all he just likes people!
Back when I was a teenager I had a few run-ins with Stan at conventions (you can see a video with original footage of my first run in with Stan by CLICKING HERE). Then, when I became a professional comic book artist I had even MORE run-ins with him BUT it wasn’t until I taped that first ‘The Comic Greats’ show that really kicked off our friendship. Whether I was 16, 35 or now…Stan is STILL the humble charming guy we all know and love…
Really quick, just to PROVE how kind he is, let me tell you this quick story. This past weekend at his event, Comikaze, we were doing a panel….and one of the last questions was ‘Stan, who’s your favorite superhero??’ Stan doesn’t even take too much time to think about his answer and says, ‘In order to make a lifelong friend, SPAWN is my favorite superhero!’ I could barely believe my ears! His kindness and humility inspired then and even more now! He hasn’t changed since I’ve known him which, I think, is his MOST admirable trait.
Anyway, back to ‘The Comic Greats’ show… I ended up doing a few more tapings of the show with Stan which cemented our friendship that has lasted DECADES. I’ve even been able to join him at some of the most important events in his life like doing a speech at his Hollywood Walk of Fame Star celebration!
Here is the FIRST EVER episode of ‘The Comic Greats’ (broken into four videos)… the ONE episode that kicked off our lifelong friendship.
