Artist Block…Here’s My Advice to Get Through It!

March 21, 2018

REAL TALK….THE ‘ARTIST STRUGGLE’ IS REAL…BUT HERE’S HOW I GET THROUGH IT!!

I’ve seen a lot of comments the past week on how I get past an ‘artist block’… so, here’s my advice….

I’ve been in the comic book industry for 30+ years, and I STILL struggle to fill a page. Just because I am an artist, doesn’t mean that the art MAGICALLY appears on the page. The reality is, you have to put SOMETHING (sometimes, just ANYTHING) on the page. And more times than not, it ends up turning out better than I thought.

Here’s the cover of the very FIRST issue of Spawn. Why am I showing you a cover I’ve shown many times before? Because looking back on it… I see a few things that I would’ve changed.

1. I would’ve liked to make the composition of the cover cleaner and more clear. I’ve said this before, but the cover really needs to STAND OUT on the comic shelf.
2. I think the colors are way too muted. I wish I would’ve told the colorist to make Spawn REALLY pop!

When I did this cover (way back when), I wanted the cover of my FIRST SPAWN ISSUE to be AWESOME. I had to sit down and draw ANYTHING, just to get SOMETHING down on paper. And although it DID turn out COOL (maybe I am biased), the perfectionist in me says there’s so much more I could’ve done.

Moral of the story – to get through a block… just draw/write/whatever ANYTHING. Don’t let the pressure get to you.

Thats it.

Be good.
