An ODE to the KING OF COMICS Jack Kirby!!!
Today, Mr. Kirby would have been 100… and I’ve seen a lot of people celebrating Kirby’s magic and I wanted to join in with a little story…
There are certain projects in my professional career as a comic book artist that I consider TRUE HIGHLIGHTS. I am almost prouder of those moments than the ongoing monthly comic books that I did.
Anyway, back in the day, I got a call from my editor asking me to ink a cover for a new mini-series he was starting at Topps Comics called ‘Satan’s Six.’ Jack Kirby was the artist on the series… and for me to ink over Jack Kirby was a chance of a LIFETIME.
I got Kirby’s cover and started inking a section. I stopped inking and erased a little of the pencils to make sure my ink link was show up how I wanted it to and then I had an epiphany. I JUST ERASED JACK KIRBY’S PENCILS. I felt terrible and knew I couldn’t ink the whole page and then erase Jack’s art. I couldn’t bring myself to do that… so I ended up inking the rest on a vellum overlay and re-inking the section that I had done previously.
It turned out, Jack liked what I had done so his people called me and asked me to do another page. Since I didn’t want to do what I had done the first cover (I thought it was disrespectful), I lightboxed his pencils and inked on a seperate piece of paper. I just COULDN’T ruin his pencils!
Inking over Jack Kirby (TWICE) was the chance of a lifetime and something I’ll never, ever forget.

P.S. – Spawn #1 was dedicated to Jack Kirby. Since I was starting something new, I wanted to tip my hat to the guy who I thought had the biggest comic career.
