Happy 103rd Birthday Jack Kirby!

‘ve shared this story before, but I wanted to share it again because Jack is one of those people I’ve met that I STILL hold in high esteem. I even dedicated Spawn #1 to HIM!
Back in the day, I’d done some work inking over Jack’s pencils for a cover of Satan Six and he liked the work I did (WOW) and I was asked to do another page.
Of course I said YES, but didn’t want to ink over his pencils like I’d done on Satan Six. I felt it was disrespectful!
Anyways… I called back and asked if I could light box (a fancy way of tracing over pencils back in the day) Jack’s pencils and ink on a separate paper and give both pieces of art back to them. They agreed.
The result was me taking Jack’s pencils and stylizing them…trying to give a bit of 1990’s flavor.
About a month later, I got a package in the mail. Not only did Jack RETURN the ORIGINAL page of art to me, but wrote a little note saying, ‘To Todd. Looks great. Thank you, Jack Kirby.’
I should’ve been thanking HIM for letting ink over his artwork, but instead he was thanking ME!
THIS shows what kind of man Jack was.
