I Was Trendy Before It Was COOL to Be Trendy!

September 01, 2016

Back in the day, newsstand edition comics had a barcode on the cover and direct market comics (the ones that went to the comic book store) DIDN’T!

On the covers that went to the comic stores, publishers would replace the barcode with something generic…usually something like a company logo (I always thought that was boring).

Anyway… I started doing little drawings in the blank box area where the barcode should’ve gone as a way to add a little something EXTRA to my covers (you know I like to go the extra mile).

On the newsstand version my drawing would be replaced by the barcode, BUT the version that went to the comic shops would have my little drawing on the comic!

Other artists must have LIKED the idea because it started to catch on!!

Here are just a few of the little drawings I did back in the day. Do YOU know what issues they are from?!
