A Rousing Speaking/Signing Gig in Austin

January 18, 2002

Todd McFarlane spoke at the Online Worlds Fanfest on Jan. 12, in Austin, Texas, in support of the upcoming Ultima Online game from Origin and the associated action figure line from McFarlane Toys. Todd designed more than 30 new monsters, characters and creatures for the game. Six of them will be released as action figures.

The Fanfest was a chance for Ultima Online fans and players to check out the new game - Ultima Online: Lord Blackthorn's Revenge - as well as interact in the flesh with other players, meet the game's development team and check out plenty of UO merchandise.

The event was held Jan. 11-12 at the Austin Renaissance Hotel.

Todd gave a well-attended one-hour presentation on Saturday afternoon. The gist of the speech was how he and the McFarlane Toys designers came up with initial concept sketches for the characters and how those were translated into action figures.

Following the talk, there was a signing session, which lasted for several hours. Many fans showed up with Spawn materials for Todd to sign.

Todd also had the chance to really check out the new UO game in depth and came away very impressed with its quality and presentation. Look for McFarlane Toys' new UO line to be hitting stores in March. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for a full UO lineup story and new details.

Also check out beginning Jan. 22 for their official Fanfest review with lots of photos and game information.
