McFarlane Toys Goes All Out With First Master Toy License

December 1, 2000

The sculptors at McFarlane Toys are up to their elbows in clay as they put the finishing touches on what is the largest toy line ever produced by the company.

Based on the animated DreamWorks film - featuring the voice work of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, John Lithgow and Cameron Diaz -- to be released in May 2001, the Shrek! signing looks to be a big deal for McFarlane Toys.

"Being associated with DreamWorks for our first master toy license is obviously a huge coup for my company," said Todd McFarlane, founder of McFarlane Toys. "Shrek! will give us the opportunity to show off our skills on a much broader scale. We'll be developing a full program of toys and accessories in partnership with DreamWorks."

A master toy license is different from the licensing deals McFarlane Toys usually signs. Whereas a normal contract might enable McFarlane Toys to produce a single line of a particular property, a master toy license allows the company to produce a range of merchandise. In the case of Shrek!, McFarlane Toys has created a vast array of product, including:

  • A traditional series of 6-inch figures, boxed individually, which includes Shrek, Donkey, Fiona, Dragon, Lord Farquaad and Shrek in armor.

  • A series of 6-inch beanie figures, including Shrek, Donkey, Fiona, Dragon, Lord Farquaad and Gingerbread Man.

  • A series of 3-inch figures sold in multipacks of three figures each. The list includes all the major and many minor characters in the film, including Shrek, Fiona, Dragon, Donkey, Lord Farquaad, Knight and many more.

  • A series of larger-scale figures (10 to 14 inches) of Shrek and Donkey with sound.

  • Plush figures of Shrek and Donkey.

  • And several diorama-style playsets, including the Outhouse, Shrek's House, the Castle and the Dungeon.

  • Look for these toys and more everywhere with the release of the film in May 2001. The film trailer is online now and gives audiences a first look at the major characters of the film, including Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers), Donkey (Eddie Murphy), the Princess (Cameron Diaz) and Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow).

The preview also gives a glimpse of the film's sly humor, which will likely make it a hit with filmgoers of all ages. Shrek! tells the tale of a no-nonsense ogre named Shrek whose swamp is overrun by annoying fairytale creatures. In an attempt to save his home, Shrek sets out to confront Lord Farquaad, ruler of Duloc, who has banished all the fairytale misfits from Duloc in order to create his own perfect world. Along the way, Shrek is befriended by a wise-cracking donkey, sent to slay a fire-breathing dragon and save a beautiful princess with a deep, dark secret... just your usual fairytale stuff in this irreverent new comedy from the creators of Antz.
