TWO McFARLANE EVENTS -- NATIONAL AND COMIC-CON -- HAPPENING NOW
Meet Staffers, See New Products Right Now in both San Diego and Cleveland
Friday, July 23, 2004
The McFarlane Companies and spawn.com staffers are currently in two places at the same time: the San Diego Comic-Con and the National Sports Collectors Convention in Cleveland. Here are the details:
This year's San Diego Comic-Con event will run through July 25 at the San Diego Convention Center.
McFarlane has a booth in the Image Comics area -- booth numbers 1428 and 1329 -- displaying many of our latest action figures and two-up prototypes of upcoming figures. The booth will be staffed with spawn.com'ers ready to answer all your questions and show off our products.
We don't have an exclusive figure to offer this year, but we will have free stickers and a special newsletter to hand out that contains several big announcements.
The Spawn creative team (writer Brian Holguin, artist Angel Medina, inker Danny Miki and colorist Brian Haberlin) will be signing at our booth on Saturday, July 24 at 3 p.m.
We also host portfolio reviews for sculptors and comic artists in our booth Saturday, July 24 from 10 a.m. to noon. If we have time for additional reviews, we will post those times on the white board in the booth.
Finally, McFarlane employees are taking part in several interesting action figure-related panel discussions where the public is welcome:
Friday, July 23, 5 to 6 p.m., Room 2
Behind the Plastic
Every company has had its successful and, well, not-so-successful lines. "Behind the Plastic" looks at the triumphs and heartbreaks of launching toy lines and getting them to store shelves. Why did a line end? Why hasn't anyone made your favorite character yet? What does the future hold for your favorite line? Toy industry professionals will give you all the behind-the-scenes stories about your favorite toy lines. Moderator Julius Marx from Action Figure Times is joined by Jesse Falcon, senior product manager, Toy Biz; Kim Mattison, product development manager, Palisades Toys; Randy Falk, director of product development, NECA Inc.; Digger, president and founder of Art Asylum; Dev Gilmore, account executive, Gentle Giant Studios; Jerry Macaluso, president, SOTA; and Larry Marder, president, McFarlane Toys.
Saturday, July 24, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Room 2
How to Make Toys the McFarlane Way
Join Jean St. Jean, McFarlane Toys sculpting supervisor, in a hands-on demonstration of the artistic methods McFarlane uses to create toys. Saturday, July 24, 6 to 7 p.m., Room 7A
Under the Knife: An Action Figure Sculpting Discussion
Action figure sculpting is pop art that is just coming into the spotlight. In this discussion with some of the industry's top sculptors you will discover the path that led them to many a fanboy's dream job. Find out what tools and materials they use and where laser scanning ends and the sculptor takes over. Panelists will discuss mold making and painting, reveal their favorites and talk about which figures they would like another crack at. Moderator Julius Marx from Action Figure Times is joined by Phil Ramirez, sculptor, Toy Biz; Eric Treadaway, The Four Horsemen--sculptor, Mattel, NECA; Chris Dahlberg, The Four Horsemen--sculptor, Mattel, NECA; Dev Gilmore, account executive, Gentle Giant Studios; Jonathan Mathews, sculptor, DC Direct; Digger, president and founder, Art Asylum; Shawn Knapp, associate art director, DC Direct; Andy Bergholtz, sculptor, Sideshow Collectables; Sam Greenwell, sculptor, Toy Biz, NECA; and Jean St. Jean, sculpting supervisor, McFarlane Toys

The other half of the McFarlane Toys road team is currently at the National Sports Collector's Convention in Cleveland, Ohio at the International Expo Center through July 25. Show hours are: July 23-24 8 a.m.-6 p.m.; and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday, July 25. McFarlane Toys' booth will be located in the corporate area in booth numbers 843 and 952 (which are adjacent).
We are offering two limited-edition event-exclusive figures only available at the National:LEBRON JAMES, Cleveland Cavaliers, in his NBA Series 5 pose and dressed in his all-white Cavs uniform; andALLEN IVERSON, Philadelphia 76ers, in his NBA Series 6 pose and featuring the 76ers' blue alternate jersey, one we've never offered before. The figures are extremely limited and are priced at $15 each or $25 for both. Due the highly collectible nature of the product, availability is not guaranteed. Past McFarlane show exclusives have consistently been a sellout.
Collectors will get the opportunity to see McFarlane Toys' upcoming retail product lines before they hit store shelves. Rare prototypes will be on display from the Cooperstown Collection line featuring retired baseball legends. Also on display is a first look at the upcoming Wayne Gretzky figure from the NHL Legends line, slated for release in September. Additional figures featured at the show include the King of Rock ‘n' Roll Elvis Presley, 20th Century Fox's Alien vs. Predator, KISS, Conan, NASCAR's Dale Earnhardt Jr., along with several upcoming NFL figures and many more!
Autograph seekers will not be disappointed at this year's lineup! Hall of Famers Reggie Jackson, Tom Seaver and Mike Schmidt along with many others will be appearing at the National. The National Show is the world's largest sports and entertainment convention with more than 700 sports, toys and entertainment dealers, and an autograph pavilion with some 50 athletes and entertainment celebrities.
