THE WEEK MARKS McFARLANE TOYS' 10-YEAR MARK
First Line of Spawn Toys Revealed in New York in 1994
Friday, February 20, 2004
Who woulda' thunk it? Ten years after turning down a deal with Mattel and setting the toy industry on its ear by starting a new company, Todd McFarlane and McFarlane Toys are going stronger than ever.
It was 10 years ago this week that Todd and the rest of his fledgling toy company attended their first Toy Fair event in New York City with a handful of prototypes, concept drawings and big dreams.
A decade later, McFarlane Toys is one of the premiere toy manufacturers in the world. Though we only showed Spawn-related properties that first year, the company quickly branched into outside licenses. Through the years and continuing into 2004 and beyond, we've worked with some of the top licenses in the world as you can see by surfing through spawn.com.
Todd was quoted at the time as saying, "I didn't know how the toy business worked. I just wanted cool toys."
So he helped rewrite the rules ... new rules about detail and likeness and giving fans what they want that are still being followed today.
And rules about looking toward the future. After 10 years in business -- when most industry professionals thought the company would never get off the ground -- McFarlane Toys is still looking ahead for the next challenge. We'll talk about this again in another 10 years.
