McFarlane's Sports Picks football figures were used as a guide in the construction of the new Fiesta Bowl Trophy, to be awarded to the college football champion after the game Jan. 3, 2003. Ohio State and Miami University are playing in the title game at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, AZ.
The stunning new trophy (click here for a detail) was commissioned and designed by Molina Fine Jewelers of Phoenix. Artists at Molina contacted McFarlane Toys about using the look of our football figures as guides in the sculpting of the trophy. We were more than happy to help.
The trophy itself is stunning. It stands 46 inches tall and is 15 1/2 inches at its widest point, weighing nearly 200 pounds. The base and platform are carved from five different shades of marble. The players are created in sterling silver and the center column is lapis with 18 carat gold. The football is also 18 carat with an enameled Fiesta Bowl logo; 2,400 diamonds are encrusted across the stripe of the ball.
The creative team at Molina spent more than 2,000 hours on the project.
"It was the most fun project," said store owner Al Molina. "I've never seen so many people go without sleep and still have a great time."
