The McFarlane Companies and spawn.com staffers are packing up the trucks for the drive from Phoenix to San Diego for the 2004 Comic-Con International. This year's event will run July 22-25 at the San Diego Convention Center.

McFarlane will have a booth in the Image Comics area -- booth numbers 1428 and 1329 -- displaying many of our latest action figures and two-up prototypes of upcoming figures. The booth will be staffed with spawn.com'ers ready to answer all your questions and show off our products.

We won't have an exclusive figure to offer this year, but we will have free stickers and a special newsletter to hand out that contains several big announcements exclusive to the Con (including new info on our upcoming Spawn animation project, a new Club exclusive and the inside scoop on a top-secret McFarlane project).

There will be a couple of notable artist signings in our booth. They are:

Case Files: Sam & Twitch comic writer (Marc Andreyko) and artist (Paul Lee) will be signing at the Spawn booth on Friday, July 23 at 3 p.m.

The Spawn creative team (writer Brian Holguin, artist Angel Medina, inker Danny Miki and colorist Brian Haberlin) will be signing at our booth on Saturday, July 24 at 3 p.m.

We also host portfolio reviews for sculptors and comic artists in our booth Saturday, July 24 from 10 a.m. to noon. If we have time for additional reviews, we will post those times on the white board in the booth.

Finally, McFarlane employees are taking part in several interesting action figure-related panel discussions where the public is welcome:

Thursday, July 22, 6 to 7 p.m., Room 3
State of the Action Figure Industry
Action figure sales and marketing have changed radically since the days of walking down to your local discount stores and picking up your favorite MEGO or new Star Wars figure. The comics direct market, mail order and the Internet have all changed where and how you can find your favorite toys. Does Wal-Mart control what characters get made? Can a license without a media tie-in make it in today's crowded market? Is the collector market making a difference or is it still "all about the kids"? Find out the answers to these questions and more from a diverse group of panelists from different companies all addressing these issues. Joining moderator Julius Marx from Action Figure Times are Mike Horn, CEO, Palisades Toys; Georg Brewer, VP of design and retail product development, DC Direct; Jesse Falcon, senior product manager, Toy Biz; Brant Bridges, production manager, Sideshow Collectables; Linda Lum, president, Dreams and Visions; Digger, president and founder, Art Asylum; Jerry Macaluso, president, SOTA; Chuck Terceira, director, Diamond Select Toys; and Larry Marder, president, McFarlane Toys.

Friday, July 23, 5 to 6 p.m., Room 2
Behind the Plastic
Every company has had its successful and, well, not-so-successful lines. "Behind the Plastic" looks at the triumphs and heartbreaks of launching toy lines and getting them to store shelves. Why did a line end? Why hasn't anyone made your favorite character yet? What does the future hold for your favorite line? Toy industry professionals will give you all the behind-the-scenes stories about your favorite toy lines. Moderator Julius Marx from Action Figure Times is joined by Jesse Falcon, senior product manager, Toy Biz; Kim Mattison, product development manager, Palisades Toys; Randy Falk, director of product development, NECA Inc.; Digger, president and founder of Art Asylum; Dev Gilmore, account executive, Gentle Giant Studios; Jerry Macaluso, president, SOTA; and Larry Marder, president, McFarlane Toys.

Saturday, July 24, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Room 2
How to Make Toys the McFarlane Way
Join Jean St. Jean, McFarlane Toys sculpting supervisor, in a hands-on demonstration of the artistic methods McFarlane uses to create toys. Learn inside design, sculpting and painting secrets used in the creative process at McFarlane Toys. Moderated by Larry Marder, president of McFarlane Toys, and with Dave Gittleman, multimedia designer.

Saturday, July 24, 6 to 7 p.m., Room 7A
Under the Knife: An Action Figure Sculpting Discussion
Action figure sculpting is pop art that is just coming into the spotlight. In this discussion with some of the industry's top sculptors you will discover the path that led them to many a fanboy's dream job. Find out what tools and materials they use and where laser scanning ends and the sculptor takes over. Panelists will discuss mold making and painting, reveal their favorites and talk about which figures they would like another crack at. Moderator Julius Marx from Action Figure Times is joined by Phil Ramirez, sculptor, Toy Biz; Eric Treadaway, The Four Horsemen--sculptor, Mattel, NECA; Chris Dahlberg, The Four Horsemen--sculptor, Mattel, NECA; Dev Gilmore, account executive, Gentle Giant Studios; Jonathan Mathews, sculptor, DC Direct; Digger, president and founder, Art Asylum; Shawn Knapp, associate art director, DC Direct; Andy Bergholtz, sculptor, Sideshow Collectables; Sam Greenwell, sculptor, Toy Biz, NECA; and Jean St. Jean, sculpting supervisor, McFarlane Toys
