MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL SIGNS ON
McFarlane Toys Has All Four Major Sports Leagues

The timing couldn't have been better ... or worse. McFarlane Toys' contract with Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association was signed just days before Toy Fair in February.

That's the good news and the good timing.

The bad part of the equation is everyone in the company was in such a rush to finalize the online catalog and the showroom and all the hundreds of other details, we didn't have the opportunity to officially announce it.

Spawn.com is here to rectify that and proclaim our pleasure in finally wrapping up McFarlane Toys' long-standing goal of manufacturing the finest officially licensed sports action figures of all four major North American sports. Baseball was the final piece of that puzzle, a piece Todd McFarlane - as a former baseball player himself - is particularly proud of.

"As a baseball fan and a former player, being able to put my company's talents toward creating baseball figures that truly represent what both the players and the fans deserve is something I've wanted to do from the first moment I started my toy company," said Todd. "Getting the Major League Baseball license adds another jewel to the McFarlane's Sports Picks crown, completing all four major North American sports; something I could not have imagined just one year ago."

McFarlane Toys will release three complete baseball series in 2002, spaced out over the course of the season. McFarlane's Sports Picks: Baseball Series 1 is set for an April release and includes the following players:

  • Ichiro, Seattle Mariners outfielder, No. 51
  • Pedro Martinez, Boston Red Sox pitcher, No. 45
  • Ivan Rodriguez, Texas Rangers catcher, No. 7
  • Sammy Sosa, Chicago Cubs
  • Mike Piazza, New York Mets catcher, No. 31
  • Shawn Green, Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder, No. 15
  • Randy Johnson, Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher, No. 51
  • Albert Pujols, St. Louis Cardinals third baseman, No. 5

As fans have come to expect from McFarlane, each figure features an amazing likeness to the actual player and is sculpted in an action pose. The figures are dressed in an official team uniform and will be offered in home and away colors; each also includes a base.

Look for a full online feature dedicated to this series in the coming weeks on spawn.com. For more information about our upcoming sports lines for 2002, click here. Oh, and we may have a few, er, fastballs up our sleeve for later in the year. Stay tuned for that.
