Todd Takes on Washington, Lou Gehrig's Disease
15,000 People Visit The McFarlane Collection at ESPN Zone

Recently, a madman was loose on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, hitting the hallowed halls of the U.S. Senate and ESPN Zone, the city's entertainment and sports mecca. Todd McFarlane, however, was a madman with a mission as one of several sports and entertainment celebrities who descended on DC in support of the fight against ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease. The May 18 events were part of The ALS Association's "ALS Advocacy Day."

For his part, Todd brought The McFarlane Collection to ESPN Zone. The Collection features Mark McGwire's 70th home run baseball and nine other historic home run baseballs from the 1998 race for the record, plus baseball memorabilia in a dramatic traveling exhibit that has been seen by nearly 1 million people in the last year. He was joined in this effort by Los Angeles Dodgers great Steve Garvey, Carolina Panther's quarterback Steve Beuerlein, ESPN's Dick Schaap, actor Blair Underwood (City of Angels, Rules of Engagement) and NBA coach Don Casey. Garvey, Underwood, Beuerlein and Schaap all testified at a Senate Subcommittee hearing talking about their personal interactions with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a disease that has no known cause or cure and affects some 30,000 Americans. Todd participated in a post-hearing press conference, a luncheon, a meeting with California Senator Barbara Boxer who has sponsored ALS-friendly legislation and took a quick tour of the main Senate chamber.

After the morning activities were over, and following an ALS reception that afternoon, nearly 100 people went to ESPN Zone to view the Collection. There, a formal announcement of Lou's Team, an active sports council honoring Lou Gehrig comprised of professional athletes and celebrities with an impact on the sports and ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) communities, was made. Todd is joined on Lou's Team by Garvey, Beuerlein, Underwood, George Brett, Curt and Shonda Schilling, Pete O'Brien, Don Casey, Gary Bernardi, Ernie Banks, Steve Stone, Tom Lehman, Mrs. Helen Hunter (widow of Jim "Catfish" Hunter), Peg and Mickey Morandini, Terry Steinbach, Kent Hrbek, and Dom and Emily DiMaggio.

More than 15,000 people visited the Zone during the Collection's four-day stay on facility's main floor. It was fittingly placed on "ESPN SportsCenter" stage, which normally serves double duty as an eating area and an actual broadcast studio when the hosts of the show are in the DC area.
