Sue Uttley has an abnormal fear of escalators. When her son, John, leaves her side and ends up on an escalator, Sue must face her fears and retrieve him. Although hesitant, she is goaded by Belial and Fury in their human forms. Spawn confronts Belial for creating fear, but Belial responds that fear is his way of preparing humans for and uncertain life and an even more uncertain eternity. Sue envisions various tortures on the escalator, and feels it is leading to the gates of hell. She faces her fear for the love of her child.
